STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION OF THE DIGESTIVE TRACK
The human gastrointestinal tract (GIT) measures approximately 6 meters from the mouth to the anal canal. It has the primary functions of digestion and absorption of nutrients. Filtration and maintenance of immunity are achieved by the lining of the digestive tract, which also prevents harmful bacteria and toxins from invading the body. The normal functioning of the digestive tract is thus linked to our well being.
The main components of the GIT starting from the mouth are the oesophagus(food gullet), stomach, small intestine (3 sections : duodenum, jejunum and ileum), large intestine (colon and rectum) and anus.
